Malaga Samoa Student Values:

Students were asked “what are 3 values that are important to you?” With the preparations for Malaga Samoa underway, students will need to reflect on how these values are expressed through their actions, relationships, and cultural experiences during their journey. Overall, there’s a strong thread of family, faith, and relationships running through many of them, alongside personal responsibility and care for others. It’s a rich foundation for them to explore during Malaga Samoa and a strong anchor point which helps prepare them for what will be a challenging, but enriching experience.

Destiny Ah Ching: Respect, Diversity, Integrity

Emily McGregor: Accountability, Authenticity, Gratitude

Aleczander Fonoivasa: Food; Family; Faith

Hanalina Tanuvasa: Faith; Humility; Communication

Soolin Hansen: Loyalty; Family & Friends; Compassion

Anya Taloafulu: Family; Faith; and Kindness

In August of 2023, citizens across the nation witnessed all Covid-19 related restrictions being lifted here in Aotearoa, New Zealand. And it was during this time when we, as an organization, realized the importance of staying connected, not just virtually, but in person, kanohi ki te kanohi.

And with this, our Sistema Aotearoa students, parents, board members, and community leaders emphasised the importance of international travel, and for our participants to travel and perform abroad. It was only fitting that for our first international expedition, we embark on a journey to reach out into Te Moana Nui a Kiwa, to the ancestral homeland of many of our students - Samoa.

After careful consideration, we realised that Samoa holds particular significance for our South Auckland community, with a large majority of our program's participants hailing from this beautiful island nation. This trip presents a unique opportunity for our students to reconnect with their Pacific heritage and share the invaluable lessons learned as members of Sistema Aotearoa.

In this journey, we're empowering our rangatahi by providing a unique platform for cultural exchange, global recognition of their musical ability, and fostering personal growth — ultimately building bridges between communities, inspiring others, and leaving a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of South Auckland.
