FAQs

  • Sistema Aotearoa is completely FREE! Thanks to our amazing supporters and donors, we’re able to offer high-quality music education at no cost to families.

  • Nope! Sistema Aotearoa provides all the necessary instruments and resources for free. As your child progresses, they’ll also have the opportunity to take an instrument home to support their learning.

  • Learning a musical instrument takes commitment and consistency. Your child will need to attend both In-School and After-School Orchestra sessions regularly. Being part of a music group is like being part of a team — every member matters!

  • We understand that sometimes things come up. If your child is going to be away, please let us know as soon as possible. Regular attendance is really important — it helps your child grow and supports the whole orchestra.

  • We’ll keep in touch through texts, emails, and printed notices. Make sure your contact details are up to date so you don’t miss important information.

Term dates and lesson times

  • Term I: 10th February - 3rd April

  • Term II: 5th May - 26th June

  • Term III: 21st July - 11th September

  • Term IV: 13th October - 18th November

If you know of any issues with attendance, please reach out as soon as possible. We are always happy to hear from you and are keen to find a solution so that your child does not fall behind their peers.

If you have any worries, questions or concerns about attendance, please get in touch.

Instrument License Tests

This is always an exciting time of year when we get to introduce our next Sistema Aotearoa generation to taking an instrument home. Read on if your child is in our Te Rerenga Koa Orchestra.

1. How the Sistema Aotearoa Instrument Library works

  • We issue you with a Sistema Aotearoa Library Card

  • As with a normal library, when your wish to loan an instrument, a tutor will scan your library card and we will provide an instrument and music book to take home for ONE WEEK

  • The following week, you bring back the instrument and you can then borrow another instrument that same week if you want to

2. How to get a Sistema Aotearoa Instrument Library Card

  • Your child sits a short test which involves basic technique and instrument care

  • You and your child attend a short meeting with Matua Justin on instrument care at home, practice tips and how to use the library

3. Why take an instrument home?

  • Once we start practicing, our progress soars and we can play even more complex and beautiful music on our own and with our friends

  • Advanced skill on an instrument looks great on your CV and can support scholarships and applications for school and beyond

    • (Did you know that Sistema Aotearoa can also write references and student endorsements based on attendance, progress and all round commitment to learning and working with others? - just ask!)

  • Opens up opportunities to play with and for whānau, church, school, and at birthdays, parties - send us your own photos and videos of what taking an instrument home meant for your whānau 😍
