Sistema Aotearoa Performing at the University of Auckland, New ZealandAuckland University invited Sistema Aotearoa to bring a group of students to perform at a major international event – the 7th International Arts Alliance conference. The conference theme was Engaging with Communities: Creative Pedagogies and the delegates were Arts specialists from around the globe.

This really put Sistema Aotearoa in the spotlight and the students who played did themselves, Sistema Aotearoa, their Otara community and their culture proud.

The audience of Arts specialists from around the globe were very appreciative and even asked  our students for an encore!  Following their performance Assistant Professor at UNC, Charlotte, and Sistema Fellow from the USA Jonathan Govias wrote:

it was clear that the students were displaying little to no performance anxiety, were well prepared and were proud of their achievements. These are essential hallmarks of the desired social growth in the participants. Repertoire balanced populist selections like film scores with indigenous or traditional music, showing an important degree of cultural sensitivity

Even more impressive than their playing was the ease with which the students mixed with the conference delegates after the event. They were well-behaved, welcoming and articulate . Our girls even treated them to some a cappella singing. After the performance we spent a little time looking around the University and the various faculties where lots of inspiration for future study goals were found. What a morning!
