On Saturday, July 22nd, all five Sistema Aotearoa orchestras performed at the Vodafone Events Centre as part of the APO Adventures South programme.
This was a particularly exciting moment for our youngest Tupaia orchestra, who performed their first concert ever to more than 700 family, friends, and members of the public. Despite the large audience, the tamariki were confident and performed a great first concert.
The older Iriaka and Kupe orchestras also performed well. Both orchestras demonstrated their developing skills in musicianship and performed with great amounts of confidence, acting as role models for our younger students.
We always look forward to these performance opportunities at the Vodafone Events Centre, as they help develop confidence in our tamariki and give them an opportunity to share what they’ve been learning with family and friends in a more formal concert setting.
It was also inspiring for the younger children to watch our oldest students perform with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Sistema Aotearoa’s Tiki Orchestra performed two pieces with the APO: Palladio by Karl Jenkins and the kiwi classic Poi E. In addition to our string players, the performance of Poi E also featured a group of charismatic singers from the Tiki Orchestra. The students had been rehearsing in preparation for many weeks and their hard work paid off with an energetic and well executed performance.
It was a fabulous opportunity for our students to play side by side with musicians from a professional orchestra and to be conducted by David Kay – an experience that we’re sure will have a lasting impact on our students and be talked about for many years to come!
We’re so proud of our talented Sistema Aotearoa students and would like to congratulate them on a very successful concert day. Many thanks go to our friends at the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra for their support and a great performance opportunity.
